Ehud Barak, former prime minister of Israel, believes Vladimir Putin could become a major player in Donald Trump’s potential plans for Iran.

In his opinion, Trump could try to involve Russia in the negotiations to pressure Tehran to stop its actions directed against Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Israel. Barak believes that strategy could include interconnected negotiations with Moscow over Ukraine. Trump would likely count on Putin’s help to find a compromise that includes new deals with Iran.
Barak notes that such an agreement would likely include the development of a new nuclear deal with Iran that would have the support of the international community. At the same time, recall that Trump has taken a tough stance toward Iran in the past, withdrawing from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and actively opposing international initiatives aimed at restoring the nuclear deal.
However, the former prime minister stresses that the isolationist attitude of a possible new Trump administration could force him to consider a broader agreement, in contrast to Biden’s current course.
Barak also suggests that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could be considering attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities, despite Biden’s disapproval of such actions. However, he doubts that Trump would be more inclined to support such measures, as he would most likely prefer diplomatic measures.
