Israeli forces remain active in the Gaza Strip, despite the end of hostilities in Lebanon.
According to the BBC, the IDF is creating a new separation strip that runs through the northern part of the sector. Satellite images studied by journalists indicate large-scale demolitions of buildings and clearing of the territory. This corridor, about 9 kilometers long, separates the northern cities of the sector, such as Jabaliya, Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahiya, from Gaza City.
The IDF is actively clearing the area of buildings using controlled explosions. Analysts point out that the IDF’s actions are aimed at simplifying control of the region, dividing the sector into sectoral zones and preventing the return of Palestinian Arabs to the northern areas. Satellite images show military equipment and troops deployed across the entire width of the new strip.
Dr HA Hellyer of the Rusi think tank suggested that Israel could be preparing for a long-term deployment of its forces to the area. According to him, the clearing of the territory, the construction of roads and the creation of military infrastructure indicate an intention to block the return of Palestinians to the area.
Hellyer suggested that Israeli settlements could appear in this territory in the future, which, initially, would probably be positioned as temporary outposts.
