The history of Buitrago de Lozoya dates back to medieval times. Your main architectural attraction is its historic centerwhich retains a medieval layout with almost complete walls surrounding the city. These walls date from the 12th century and are very well preserved, with several towers and access doors.
Inside the walls are narrow, cobbled streets, old houses and the Church of Santa Maria del Castillobuilt in the 16th century on the remains of an ancient fortress.
In addition to its architectural heritage, Buitrago de Lozoya also has notable natural wealth. It is located in a mountainous environment, on the banks of the Lozoya Rivermaking it a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling and fishing.
Around the municipality, you will find protected natural areas such as the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park and the Riosequillo Reservoirwhich offer spectacular landscapes and a great diversity of flora and fauna.
Where is Buitrago and how to get there?
Buitrago has around 1,900 inhabitants and is located next to the A-1, the so-called Burgos highway which runs from the capital.
To get to Buitrago de Lozoya by public transport, the ideal is to take the intercity bus 191 which leaves directly from the Plaza de Castilla interchange.
It is also possible to take, also from the Plaza de Castilla, the bus 196 which passes through the following cities: Madrid – Alcobendas – San Sebastián de los Reyes – Colmenar Viejo – San Agustín de Guadalix – El Molar – Pedrezuela – La Cabrera – Buitrago del Lozoya – Venturada – Lozoyuela-Navas-Sieteiglesias – Cabanillas de la Sierra – Puentes Viejas – El Berrueco – Piñuécar – Horcajo de la Sierra – La Acebeda – Madarcos.
