The Marburg fever outbreak in Rwanda could be declared over in six weeks if there are no new cases in the country from November 9. This was reported by the press service of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday, November 13.
“The countdown to the recommended 42-day period needed to declare the end of the Marburg virus disease outbreak in Rwanda began on November 9.” —said the WHO in a statement.
The organization issued a press release the day after laboratory tests confirmed the recovery of the last of the patients.
The 42-day period is twice the incubation period for Marburg fever. There have been no new cases of the disease since October 30 or deaths since October 14, the WHO clarified.
Previously, on October 12, the WHO reported the death of 13 Rwandans from Marburg fever. After contracting fever, 15 people recovered, the organization added. At the same time, more than 700 people who had contact with the infected are under medical supervision. The WHO classified the outbreak as a level 3 emergency, Izvestia recalls.
