The elected regional director for Africa of the World Health Organization (WHO), Faustin Ndugulile, died while receiving treatment in India.

The cause of the 55-year-old doctor’s death is still unknown. Funeral plans will be announced at a later date.
Ndugulile was appointed WHO Africa director in August and was due to take office in February 2025, replacing Dr Matshidiso Moeti. In his opening remarks, Nduqulile emphasized his commitment to improving the health and well-being of the people of Africa.
Meanwhile, more than 35,000 suspected cases of “mpox” (monkeypox) and almost a thousand deaths due to this infection have been reported in Africa. A particularly pronounced increase in illnesses and deaths due to suspected Mpox was observed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where 30,766 cases and 990 deaths were reported.
