The World Health Organization (WHO) has decided to maintain a state of emergency in the field of public health of international importance due to the spread of “mpox” (monkeypox).
Oku.AzAccording to information provided by the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the WHO, made a statement based on the recommendations of the emergency committee experts on “mpox.”
The committee met on November 22 for the second time after August 2022 due to the rise of monkeypox. Experts have concluded that the disease continues to constitute a public health emergency of international concern.
According to WHO, this decision is based on the growing number of patients and the continued geographic spread of mpox, which requires a coordinated response from countries and partners.
The Mpox emergency committee report will be published next week.
Previously, WHO reported that from January 1, 2022 to September 30, 2023, there were 109,699 confirmed cases of mpox, including 236 deaths, in 123 countries. The monkeypox global public health emergency was originally in effect from July 2022 to May 11, 2023. This regime was lifted due to the decline in the disease, but on August 14 of this year, Ghebreyesus again declared the state of emergency due to a new outbreak of the disease in Africa.
