A group of jurists and intellectuals have just filed a complaint against the former king of Spain. We are prosecuting King Juan Carlos because he is guilty of a crime against the public treasury. But we prosecuted him, mainly because, being clearly guilty of a crime, he was not even tried. We are filing this complaint because we believe that in a rule of law, we are all equal before the law. We ultimately had to file this complaint because it seems that when it comes to certain people, the prosecution prefers not to do its job.
Our complaint is based on the facts demonstrated by the prosecution. In this sense, there is no doubt: thanks to the investigations carried out by the Spanish Prosecutor’s Office with the help of other European countries, it was demonstrated in 2020 that between 2014 and 2019, without a doubt, Mr. Borbón received numerous payments from various foreign-based foundations, primarily to fund private travel and luxury firearms, but he did not pay taxes for this. In the five years following his abdication, he stopped paying around four million euros to the Treasury. Given the high amounts, he clearly committed a tax offense punishable by the Penal Code.
