Former Catalan President Jordi Pujol and his seven children can now mark the date of their trial in the National Court on charges of allegedly forming a criminal organization that enriched itself for decades through corrupt activities using their political position . The trial will start on November 10 next year and it is expected to last until April 2026, for which 55 sessions are scheduled.
Former president will have to sit on the bench at 96 years old. It’s been over 10 years since this investigation into the Pujols officially began. The journalist of the Tribunales de la Sexta, Alfonso Pérez Medina, explained why these trials last so long.
“Justice is very slow,” he noted, stressing that “the conversations will have to be erased” and that there have been “commissions rogatory which were in progress”. “Finally, there are dates,” he said, pointing to November 10, 2025, but recalling that the process will extend until April 2026.
“Now, the parties must justify the relevance of the statements they request. Among the witnesses they request, is the retired commissioner José Manuel Villarejo or the director of the National Police of the Popular Party Eugenio Pino”, indicated Pérez Medina. He also recalled that the fight against corruption requires nine years for former president Pujol and between eight and 29 years for his seven children – Jordi, Josep, Oriol, Marta, Mireia, Pere and Oleguer.
In addition to Pujol and her seven children, the court composed of judges María Riera, Carolina Rius and María Fernanda García will also judge other people. 17 people, including several businessmen.
