Why is the cost of living there higher than in France? Understand in three minutes

In Martinique, from 1Ahem In September 2024, the Rally for the Protection of Afro-Caribbean Peoples and Resources (RPPRAC) is mobilising to demand that prices be aligned with those in France.

On this West Indian island, food products cost between 30% and 42% more than in France, according to a survey by INSEE. This is in a context of rampant inflation and while nearly 27% of the population lives below the poverty line. According to the Competition Authority, the cost of living in the overseas territories is, on average, between 19% and 38% higher than in France.
