Christened by Russia as “Orechnik”, the missile that hit the Ukrainian city of Dnieper on Thursday, November 21, belongs to the category of intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBM). The attack came as a surprise because Russia was not supposed to be in possession of this type of weapon, and it is the first time such a missile has been used in a theater of war.
IRBM missiles can carry nuclear warheads and hit very distant targets. The development of this type of missile was prohibited by the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, but in 2019 the United States and Russia withdrew from this treaty.
