Russian President Vladimir Putin did not congratulate Donald Trump on his victory in the US presidential election and, according to experts, this may be the result of an agreement between his teams.
Political scientist Viktor Nebozhenko, director of Ukraine’s Barometer sociological service, suggested in a comment to the Telegraph that the congratulations could have been transmitted through a third party, avoiding public contacts.
Nebozhenko also noted that American society is generally tolerant of Trump, despite his controversial statements and toughness, but any hint of closeness to Putin provokes a negative reaction among many.
According to him, it is precisely this association that could affect Trump’s credibility, especially in light of Russia’s aggressive foreign policy in recent years, including the attack on Ukraine. Thus, an agreement could emerge between the leaders’ administrations to prevent the public display of their personal connections.
The expert also highlighted the role of Elon Musk, who maintains good relations with both Trump and Putin. According to Nebozhenko, Musk, having the ability to move freely, can serve as a kind of intermediary, transmitting messages between leaders. This is especially important in conditions where Putin will not be able to personally visit the United States due to the decision of the International Criminal Court, even though the country has not signed the Rome Statute.
Nebozhenko believes that Putin’s distancing himself from Trump’s congratulations was a tactical measure.
Previously, Kursor wrote that Trump’s selfishness could work in Ukraine’s favor.
Despite the risks, the unpredictability of the new American president could bring new opportunities to kyiv.
