Wild animals to be killed in Namibia due to hunger

Namibia plans to cull hundreds of wild animals soon in a bid to alleviate the effects of famine caused by the drought that hit the country this year. It is part of a wildlife management programme aimed at addressing food security in the country and “maintaining ecological balance through continued hunting”.

This is reported by the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation – CIC.

According to the UN, 1.4 million people are suffering from hunger in Namibia, which is why the country declared a state of emergency in May this year. As a result, the Namibian Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism has allowed the killing of 723 wild animals, including elephants, zebras, hippos and antelopes. Hunting to combat hunger will take place in areas where populations exceed the capacities of the ecosystem.

The Namibian government believes that this will enable it to supply meat to the communities most affected by the drought. In addition, according to the authorities, these measures aim to “reduce the suffering of animals due to the harsh conditions, avoiding further environmental degradation.”

Unfortunately, Namibia’s conservation strategy includes constant hunting and ensuring responsible management of wildlife populations. It is believed to resolve human-wildlife conflict and food security, thereby supporting both ecosystem health and population well-being.

What is surprising is that the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC) considers this treatment of animals to be a responsible and efficient use of natural resources.

Recall that Cursor recently wrote that a bear named Donchik suddenly attacked its trainer during a circus performance in Biysk (Russian Federation), in front of hundreds of spectators, including children.
