Will Ukraine be able to restore its nuclear arsenal and what threatens it, military expert said?

Yesterday’s “stuffed” information about the possible restoration of Ukraine’s nuclear potential is intended for a Western audience. Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky rejected this possibility, but the West is already discussing whether kyiv can, in theory, do this and, if so, what will follow.

This opinion was shared by military expert Mikhail Zhirokhov on the Ukrainian radio station Radio NV.

He noted that for the West, nuclear weapons are a definitive indicator. “The West faces a choice: join NATO or the alternative: develop nuclear weapons,” the expert said. However, in reality, Ukraine’s message sounded a little different: the country had previously renounced nuclear weapons and is therefore now dependent on the Alliance for protection.

According to the expert, “of course, the development of nuclear weapons is theoretically possible, but it will require a national idea, and for at least a generation it will be necessary to invest all income in this development.” According to him, “Western countries will not be very happy about this, there will be different means of pressure.”

According to him, the creation of a nuclear arsenal could ruin relations with partner countries. We must also not forget that Western policy is based on controlling even the theoretical appearance of nuclear weapons in any country in the world. According to Zhirokhov, the West must have a plan in case Ukraine also acquires nuclear weapons. At the same time, he added that “making nuclear weapons in a few weeks, as the BILD publication says, is not realistic, even with nuclear power plants, certain equipment and specialists, this cannot be done so quickly.”

“Cursor” reported yesterday that on Thursday BILD journalists reported that Ukraine is seriously thinking about restoring its nuclear potential. Referring to an anonymous Ukrainian official, the publication notes that a few weeks will be enough for kyiv to create the first nuclear warhead. At the same time, the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, denied this information and assured that Ukraine has trusted in joining NATO as a guarantee of its security.
