Within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), an event was held in Baku on November 17 at the initiative of the International Trade Union Confederation (ICC) and organized by the Azerbaijan Confederation of Trade Unions (ATC).
Oku.Az informs that representatives of unions from several countries participating in COP29, organized by Azerbaijan, participated in the “Strategic Day for Unions” event.
Luke Triangle, Secretary General of BHIK, briefed participants on the purpose and theme of the event and spoke about its importance. He also expressed his satisfaction with the exemplary organization and progress of COP29, and said that the discussions and results will be useful to combat the consequences of climate change.
At the event, the President of the Confederation of Trade Unions of Azerbaijan, Sahib Mammadov, spoke about the COP29 that was held in our country. He said that Azerbaijan, a responsible country, is always sensitive to global problems, the Head of our State, Mr. Ilham Aliyev takes important initiatives regarding the future of humanity. According to him, Azerbaijan organized this prestigious international event, COP29, at a high level, and all work within this framework is carried out systematically. Speaking about Azerbaijan’s green agenda, the President of the Confederation reminded the unions of their duties in the fight against climate change and drew attention to the importance of solidarity and cooperation in this direction. He noted that COP29 is a unique platform to discuss current issues such as the protection of workers’ rights and social justice and the improvement of working conditions.
It was highlighted that unions are currently involved in decision-making processes related to changes in production processes, the transition to “green technologies” and renewable energy sources. Today’s event will be the starting point for new initiatives, joint projects and the ideas and suggestions expressed will be the basis for future activities.
Then, the event and discussions held in the first week of COP29 were reviewed, the participation of unions in this process, as well as the priorities of the second week of COP29, opinions were expressed on the Nationally Determined Contributions.
Bert De Wel, coordinator of the ICRC’s Global Climate Policy, highlighted the importance of combating climate change as one of the issues that worries the world. He said that as an experienced economist working in this field, he is aware that the essence of the problem is more serious. He also shared his views on the negotiations, discussed issues and priorities within the framework of COP29.
In addition, thematic sessions were held at the event, the importance of attracting financial resources for the fight against climate change was emphasized, the agreement of the New Collective Quantitative Goal on Climate Financing was emphasized, emerging trends in the field of rights were discussed. labor, difficulties and future challenges in this direction were pointed out.
