The Environmental Protection First Coalition (EPF) held a side event on “Ecological impacts of Armenia’s mining activities on the environment in the South Caucasus” at the National NGO Forum Pavilion in the Green Zone at COP29 on November 13.

Amin Mammadov, co-founder of the coalition and chairman of the Public Council under the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, said that Armenian authorities are still silent about the environmental consequences of mining activities and do not respond to requests from local and foreign citizens. NGO.

A. Mammadov noted that Armenia, ignoring international environmental norms and standards, continues its mining activities and does not create conditions for environmental monitoring by Azerbaijani and international organizations at enterprises.

Coalition members once again called on companies working in Armenia’s mining industry to publish their Environmental Assessment Documents. It was especially highlighted that hiding these documents from the public is an unprecedented event.

The Public Union “Cartographers of Azerbaijan”, which is part of the coalition, explained to those present the theme of the map “Mineral Raw Material Resources of Armenia”, drawn up in three languages: Azerbaijani, English and Armenian.

The map contains important information to expose the negative environmental impacts of Armenia’s mining industry.

According to Mugabil Bayramov, president of the public union “Cartographers of Azerbaijan”, it is clear from the map that Armenia has deliberately concentrated the mining companies that cause the greatest damage to the environment, mainly in the western region of Zangezur, on the border with the Republic. of Azerbaijan, near cross-border rivers.

The event called on Armenia to immediately stop activities that harm the environment and comply with its obligations under international conventions.
