“Without rebuilding real democracy, nothing is possible”

lThe public response to Emmanuel Macron’s coup was expressed throughout France. And now? When will the next demonstration be organised at the headquarters of the left-wing political parties? Will there still be many of us waiting for directives from their leaders, responding to the calls of these leaders entangled in their internal battles, far removed from the daily concerns of everyone? How long will we have to endure the perpetual presidential aspirants multiplying their declarations about the denial of democracy by a president on borrowed time in order to mask their own strategy of power and their contempt for elementary democratic practices within their movement itself? Who are we kidding?

For two months we have been waiting for the appointment of a Prime Minister and we have been waiting to hear voices denouncing the plight of the victims of the catastrophes affecting the planet. In vain: in France, the catastrophic situation of national education and, more generally, the very serious situation of public services have been silenced. During the blessed time of the Olympic Games, immigrants lost their lives in makeshift boats, dictators waged their war in their own way, from Gaza to Ukraine, from Sudan to Venezuela, and the extreme right continued its rise in Europe and elsewhere.

While an awkward silence hung in our ranks at best about Hamas’s abuses, the anti-Semitic remarks aggravated the growing confusion between an Israel under the control of an unstoppable Benjamin Netanyahu and all Jews, including his fiercest opponents. Thus the gap continued to widen between the supporters of one side and the other.

Meanwhile, representatives of the New Popular Front, following populist rhetoric, tried to assure their voters of their ability to implement much of the programme. None of them had the good sense to address the population to describe the immense task that awaits us if we want to transform social relations based for decades on the law of the strongest, while at the same time projecting the construction of a pluralistic society.

In the name of neoliberalism

Within the framework of the primacy of the economy, long denounced by the Hungarian economist Karl Polanyi (1886-1964), the President of the Republic has, logically and despite the usual delays, finally appointed a right-wing prime minister, thus meeting the expectations of the far right. Since his first election, whatever the results of the popular consultations, Emmanuel Macron has governed in the name of neoliberalism, as the direct heir of the successive tenants of the aptly named Elysée Palace. This decision is not surprising, given that the majority of deputies are located on the right and far right of the political spectrum. Despite the extraordinary resistance of voters and the brakes imposed on the rise of the National Rally, the left, which came first, remains in the minority.
