World Press Photo 24 Valencia, from October 19 at the Chirivella Soriano Foundation

The Chirivella Soriano Foundation of Valencia hosts a new edition of World press photothe most prestigious exhibition in world photojournalism.

THE Chirivella Soriano and Doctornopo Foundation organize this 12th edition of the exhibition in the city, which places Valencia on the international photography circuit, with the support of the Generalitat Valenciana and the Valencia City Council.

The exhibition includes the competition’s winning photographs that depict some of the most impactful events of 2023 around the world and provide insight into multiple realities of the planet. In this sense, this edition of World Press Photo continues to show the diversity and quality of the work of graphic design professionals in the four corners of the planet, rewarding works that tell stories in each region (Africa, Asia, Europe, America North and Central America, South America, Southeast Asia and Oceania) in four formats: individual photographs, photo essays, long-term projects and open format.

This year, the winning photographs were selected from 61,062 works by 3,851 photographers from 130 countries. The global winners were selected from 24 regional winners, all on display in the exhibition.

Photo of the year

“Palestinian Woman Kisses Body of Niece,” by Palestinian photojournalist Mohammed Salem (Reuters), shows a Palestinian woman holding the body of her 5-year-old niece, killed along with her mother and sister by an Israeli missile in Khan. Yunis, Gaza.

Graphic report of the year

Open format

The award-winning open-format work, “War is Personal,” by Ukrainian Julia Kochetova, brings together photography, poetry, audio and music in an interactive website that combines photojournalism with a personal documentary to show world what it’s like to live with war in Ukraine.

2023. one of the years with the most deaths of journalists

World Press Photo promotes press freedom by exhibiting the world’s best photojournalism and documentary photography, supporting photographers and introducing visual education to a wider audience.

Of the 99 journalists and media workers who died worldwide in 2023, 72 were killed in the Gaza war, making this year one of the deadliest on record, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. Since the start of the war, at least 95 journalists and media workers have been confirmed dead: 90 Palestinians, two Israelis and three Lebanese.
