“The year 2023 broke all records in terms of temperature indicators. But that’s not all: the predictions for 2024 are even more dire. The temperature is expected to rise more than 1.5 degrees above the pre-revolution level industrial”.
Oku.AzAccording to Steven Cornelius, vice president for climate and energy issues of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), this was stated at the press conference held in Baku within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework United Nations. Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
He stressed that this does not mean reaching the limit of global warming, but it is an alarm signal.
“We are seeing worse and more intense climate threats: longer heat waves, larger floods, massive wildfires… All of this is a result of human activity,” he said.
The expert pointed out the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas), as well as the irrational use of land and deforestation, as the main causes of what happened.
“If we fail to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees, all our lives and livelihoods will be at risk,” Cornelius warned.
