Zapatero claims to have facilitated Edmundo’s arrival in Spain and refuses to criticize Maduro to “preserve trust”

José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has finally broken his silence after the elections in Venezuela. The socialist leader acknowledged having participated in the operation so that Edmundo González could leave his country and go into exile in Spain, but he did not want to censor the regime of Nicolas Maduro in order to “preserve the confidence” of all parties.

“The Lord [Edmundo] González has spoken these days and now I have the opportunity to say something,” he said. “I participated in the task of facilitating his arrival in Spain,” he acknowledged Tuesday at an event held at the Ateneo de Madrid.

However, the former president did not want to give more details about this operation, nor did he comment on whether Edmundo González could have been pressured by the Spanish embassy in Venezuela to comply with the alleged victory of Nicolas Maduro in the elections that took place last July.

“I have to say that when someone facilitates and arbitrates, they have to be extraordinarily respectful. It is a right and a duty to maintain discretion and loyalty to the people who have allowed or wanted you to facilitate a task,” Zapatero added.
