The government of Zaragoza approved this week the authorization of the celebration of bullfights in the street, such as the heifers, the rope bull or the fire bolado, among others, given the roots and the long bullfighting tradition that exists in the Aragonese capital.
This decision follows what is indicated in the Bullfighting festival rules Popular of the Government of Aragon, which establishes the promotion of Aragonese culture and tradition, the safety of people and the welfare of animals in this type of events.
Considering that the bullfighting festival is one of the main events of the local festivals and one of the distinctive signs, constituting a cultural heritage that must be preserved, the municipal government, coinciding with Vox’s approachapproved the cancellation of the municipal agreement of February 12, 2016 and now expresses the “conformity” for the celebration of these popular bullfighting festivals.
This includes the release of fighting cattle, the rope bull, the round bull, the ensogado, the embolado or the engamellado, hypotheses that are included in the Regulation of the Government of Aragon updated in May 2023, in the last legislature. In this way, the municipal agreement is also adapted to what is stipulated in the regional regulations, where obligations and rights are reflected and the welfare of the animals is guaranteed.
The said autonomous decree indicates the obligation to ensure integrity and quality of the celebration and security of the public, while emphasizing the improvement of veterinary inspection, the search for animal welfare and compliance with health regulations. In any case, the authorization of this type of events in the city will depend on the Regional Executive.

“It was not understood that in a city a few kilometers from Zaragoza these popular demonstrations were scheduled and that they could not take place in our streets and rural neighborhoods, when the bullfighting festivities are one of the main complaints of the festival programs, taking into account the long bullfighting tradition and the roots that exist in our city,” he concluded.
