Zelensky calls for bringing Ukraine “under NATO umbrella” to appease Russia and recover what was lost through diplomatic means

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskysuggested this Friday that a ceasefire deal could be reached in the Ukraine war if the territory it currently controls remained “under the aegis of NATO” and could diplomatically negotiate the return of the rest later.

“If we want to end the ‘hot phase’ of the war, we must bring the territory of Ukraine that we control under the NATO umbrella. We must do this quickly, then “The rest of the (occupied) territory can be recovered through diplomatic channels.”said the Ukrainian leader in an interview with SkyNews.

Zelensky thus responded to veteran correspondent Stuart Ramsay, who asked the Ukrainian to react to reports from some media that one of the plans of the President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, to end the war in Ukraine could be that Kyiv ceded to Russia the lands that Moscow annexed in exchange for membership in NATO.

In this sense, Zelensky commented that no one officially offered them “to enter NATO with only part of Ukraine” and that to ensure that Russian President Vladimir Putin did not return to take more Ukrainian territory, a ceasefire was necessary and that the Alliance “immediately” covered the part of the country under kyiv’s control.

However, he clarified: “The an invitation should be extended to Ukraine under its internationally recognized bordersyou can’t include just part of the country. Because? Because then you would admit that Ukraine is only part of the territory and the other part is Russia,” which would go against the Ukrainian Constitution.

In Zelensky’s first interview with British media since Trump’s election victory, the Ukrainian president said he will have to work with the new US president and his team to have “the greatest support”, and admitted that during their meeting last month in September in New York. York, they had a “very warm, good and constructive” conversation.

As highlighted SkyNewsit is also the first time that Zelensky has alluded to a ceasefire agreement providing for Russian control of part of Ukrainian territory, since throughout the conflict, he has always shown himself reluctant to cede parts of the country to Russiaincluding Crimea, annexed since 2014, and Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporiya, unilaterally declared Russian since September 2022.

The war in Ukraine has rapidly escalated in recent weeks, particularly after the United States gave kyiv the green light to use long-range missiles against military targets on Russian territory; to which Putin recently responded with multiple attacks and the new Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missiles.
