Nikita Zhuravel, 20, convicted of burning the Koran, is charged with high treason, the Volgograd region prosecutor’s office told reporters.
“The prosecutor’s office of the Volgograd region approved an indictment in a criminal case against previously convicted 20-year-old Nikita Zhuravel. He is charged under art. 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (high treason)”, — said the supervisory authority in a statement.
According to the investigation, Zhuravel, through a courier, offered cooperation to a representative of the Ukrainian security service. In March 2023, a defendant in a criminal case sent to an accomplice abroad video recordings of a train carrying military equipment of the Russian Armed Forces, flying military aircraft, and data on the movement of an official vehicle of a of the military units of the Russian Ministry of Defense.
It should be noted that Zhuravel fully admitted his guilt in his crime. The criminal case was sent by the regional prosecutor’s office for consideration on the merits to the Volgograd Regional Court. Sanctioning art. 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation provides for a maximum prison sentence of up to 20 years.
