🎙PODCAST | Mass tourism: criticism is no longer taboo

It has now been a decade since the first protests by neighbors and groups affected by the impact of mass tourism. The response they received from public authorities was accusations of tourism phobia, of being a group of “radical reds” who “bite the hand that feeds us.” The inaction of politics throughout this period has accentuated and extended the negative consequences of this phenomenon to more and more places and to a greater number of people.

However, the citizen protests that in recent months have brought hundreds of thousands of people to the streets of several autonomous communities are causing a change in discourse among leaders who, despite being ardent defenders of the free market, are submitting to the evidence and now admitting the need to regulate this sector. With colleagues from elDiario.es from Catalonia, Pau RodrĂguez; from the Balearic Islands, Angy GalvĂn; and from Andalusia, NĂ©stor Cenizo, we travel to different regions of Spain to see how the criticism of mass tourism and the discourse or response of public administrations have evolved throughout this period.
