Storms destroy regional highway in Huesca, leaving two urban centers isolated

The strong storms recorded on Monday in the Sierra de Guara, in the province of Huesca, washed away the A-1227 regional road, which had to be cut in two points due to the abundance of water and the stones and mud that were removed from the asphalt at the height of Yaso, in the municipality of Huesca, Bierge.

Both the aforementioned nucleus and that of Bastarás have been isolated because it is the only access to this place. The General Directorate of Roads and Infrastructures works all day to open the road with the aim of opening at least one of the two lanes and being able to give alternating passages towards Bierge and Abiego.

Specifically, the cuts were recorded at kilometer points 30,800 and 27,200. In the first of them, water and dragged materials washed away one and a half meters of road, which prevented motorists from passing.

In the second point, the damage was greater, since it affected about 30 meters of road in both directions, as reported by the Government of Aragon. This action, more important, will be carried out through an emergency action that will require a period of almost three months.

For this Wednesday, the National Meteorological Agency maintains the orange rain warning in the center of Huesca and the Pyrenees of Huesca until mid-morning, and the same in Albarracín, Jiloca, Gúdar and Maestrazgo from 2:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation (CHE) maintains surveillance due to the intense rains that occurred after an early morning with multiple flash floods and warnings to 112 and with the forecast that the rains and the increase in river levels will continue this Tuesday.

After a few previous days and an early morning from Monday to Tuesday of instability and stormy rains, many Aragonese riverbeds have experienced or are currently experiencing flash floods of an ordinary nature but also, in some cases, of an extraordinary nature and with the capacity to generate conditions.

The intense rains, of more than 30 litres per square metre in one hour in some cases, fundamentally affected the small canals which then transferred their floods to other larger canals with greater transport capacity.

The floods that generate the most effects are in the Iberian system. Yesterday afternoon, a waterspout on the left bank of the Jalón caused extraordinary floods in the tributaries of the Manubles and especially in the Ribota. This circumstance generated an extraordinary flood in the Jalón itself, downstream of the town of Ateca, which is currently flowing in its middle section – near Morata de Jalón – with a flow of around 60 cubic metres and this during the day when it will move towards the lower part of the Jalón.

Meanwhile, on the right bank of the Jalón basin, another major storm south of the Gallocanta lagoon, early Monday afternoon, generated a new flood of the upper Piedra River, which reached the town of Cimballa and arrived at dawn in Nuevalos.
