Korea Box Office: Film “Exhuma” Beats Oscar winner Film “Parasite”

South Korean horror thriller film Exhuma starring Choi Min Shik, Kim Go Eun and Lee Do Hyun which was written and directed by Jang Jae-hyun released on February 22 and since has set several records.

Recently On March 24, Exhuma became the first 2024 South Korean film to reach the 10 million mark within 32 days of its release. Moreover, Exhuma also broke Parasite’s record in terms of box office revenue and number of viewers. 

Korean Film Council announced that Exhuma broke Parasite’s box office numbers

On March 27, the Korean Film Council announced that Exhuma’s box office numbers topped Parasite’s in terms of total admissions and total gross. It is the 23rd South Korean to have achieved this. The cast and crew came together to celebrate the 10 million mark.

Exhuma also took the crown of the first horror occult movie to garner more than 10 million moviegoers.

Plot of Exhuma

A wealthy Korean American Los Angeles family plagued by a generational curse enlists the help of a young, renowned Korean shaman and her protégé, Hwa-rim and Bong-gil, to protect their baby. Hwa-rim detects the presence of a vengeful ancestor’s spirit haunting the family, known as a ‘Grave’s Call’.

With the assistance of Korea’s most acclaimed feng shui master Kim Sang-deok and undertaker Yeong-geun, they set out to unearth and relocate the grave to appease the ancestor. They are shocked to find the grave in an ominous location.

Sang-deok senses a sinister energy and wants to reject the job, but with Hwa-rim’s persuasion, the excavation begins. In the process, however, evil forces are released which threaten the family’s lives.

Exhuma had its world premiere on February 16, 2024, as part of the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, in Forum. It was released theatrically on February 22, 2024, in South Korea by Showbox Co., Ltd.

The film will be first screened at the 48th Hong Kong International Film Festival on April 7, 2024 in Gala presentations.

The film was produced by Showbox and Pinetown Production in association with MCMC.
