Askar Akayev, ousted in 2005, appealed to the Kyrgyz Parliament

Askar Akayev, who led Kyrgyzstan for 15 years from 1990, has called on parliament to restore his status as “former president”.

Oku.Az Sputnik Kyrgyzstan reports on this.

It should be noted that Akayev was overthrown in March 2005. In 2021, he flew to Bishkek for the first time to testify in the Kumtor case. Later, the country’s current president, Sadyr Japarov, stated that Akayev had fully paid for his past mistakes.

The Prosecutor General’s Office later said the criminal case against Akayev had been dropped.

Akayev said he plans to return to Kyrgyzstan after his retirement.
