Regular use of a mobile phone may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Scientists analysed the records of 444,000 Britons who provided information on the frequency of mobile phone use between 2006 and 2010. They were observed for around 12 years. Regular mobile phone use (at least one call per week) has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, especially in smokers and people with diabetes.
“Poor sleep patterns and mental health problems, circadian rhythm disturbances, endocrine and metabolic disorders, as well as increased inflammation, may have a negative impact on the development of cardiovascular diseases,” the scientists noted.
The study’s authors also report that frequent exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation from cell phones can lead to inflammation, a risk factor for many diseases.
In an editorial about the study, scientists not involved in the study noted that participants were recruited before modern smartphone use became widespread. Phones are now used more for texting and entertainment than for calling. Therefore, the relevance of the research results should be confirmed by further studies.
