This Monday, a 71-year-old man became the Fourth death this summer due to the West Nile virus in the province of Seville. The deceased resided in Coria del Río, one of the municipalities most affected by the plague.

This was confirmed by the city’s mayor, Modesto González, in Europe PressIt is expected that in the next few hours the Health Department of the Junta de Andalusia will officially notify the death, the fourth this summer caused by the virus.

This death is added to that of a 71-year-old woman from Dos Hermanas with previous pathologies; an 86-year-old woman infected in La Puebla del Río and another woman over 87 years old with previous pathologies, also a resident of Coria del Río.

The Junta has deployed in response to the situation the First Andalusian Strategic Plan for Surveillance and Control of Arthropod Vectors that Impact Health (PEVA), which obliges the town halls of the municipalities affected by the problem of mosquitoes transmitting the West Nile fever virus to deploy municipal plans for preventive fumigation against these insects.

However, the municipalities are demanding greater “involvement” from the Commission in this matter and that the cost of the pest control work does not fall exclusively on them.

In addition, the Provincial Council of Seville has hired more than a million euros to two pest control companies, to strengthen and expand municipal plans in the 13 municipalities designated by the Junta de Andalucía as affected by this situation.

These are Almensilla, Aznalcázar, Bollullos de la Mitación, Las Cabezas de San Juan, Coria, Dos Hermanas, Isla Mayor, Los Palacios and Villafranca, La Puebla del Río, Lebrija, Palomares, Utrera and Villamanrique de la Condesa; Although infected neighbors have already been detected in Alcalá de Guadaíra, Mairena del Aljarafe and also Gerena.
