Getxo City Council paralyzes work on some luxury homes due to illegal demolition of 19th century palace

A field is the new landscape of the inhabitants of Getxo (Bizkaia) after the demolition of a protected 19th century neoclassical mansion. The Ereaga Atalaya cooperative, which refused to speak with LaSexta, decided go down without a permitAccording to the City Hall, this protected building will allow the construction of 12 luxury homes with views of the port of Algorta.

Gonzalo Arroita, a consultant for the United Nations and UNESCO Chair, said that “the builder said it had fallen. But it is really an irreplaceable loss because it is a attack on heritage”.

It was planned that these apartments were built in the palace itselfrespecting the facade and its exterior structure. However, the local police verified in August that it was carrying out unauthorized demolition work, when the mansion had to be rehabilitated. But it is clear that the damage is already irreparable, as Arroita points out: “If it could be repaired, it would be a completely different thing.”

For this reason, the municipality of Getxo immediately stopped the works, demanding that submit all documentation within thirty days.
