Mañueco engages in “militant activism” of the Transition which, according to him, was carried out with “mastery” by Adolfo Suárez

The President of the Council, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, pleaded yesterday for the “militant activism” of the Spanish Transition so that this stage that former President Adolfo Suárez led with “mastery” is better known and which he denounced is now “so unjustly attacked”. by separatist and populist forces, “skinny in terms of global vote”, but with “huge political influence”. However, despite their efforts, he assured that they will never be able to hide the “extraordinary” achievements of this period.

“The peace, freedom, equality, justice, coexistence and democracy that we enjoy today have not always been there,” said Fernández Mañueco, who recalled that they are the result of “ a lot of sacrifices and agreements.”

This Wednesday, the president shared with the former presidents of the government Felipe González and José María Aznar, the day “Ten years since his departure: reflections on Adolfo Suárez”, organized by the Commission and the Catholic University of Ávila (UCAV) at the Lienzo Norte Congress Center.

In his speech, Fernández Mañueco assured that Adolfo Suárez was one of the most important figures in the history of Spain, that he had not had equal work without Cebreros, Ávila and Castilla y León, a land that the former president himself admitted to having taught that “the greatest masterpiece of man is life itself” and “that it is not worth much if it does not is not dedicated to the service of others. In addition, he also emphasized that passion for Spain and freedom are feelings that are born in his country from the intelligence and the heart.

For their part, the former presidents of the government Felipe González and José María Aznar highlighted the framework of coexistence created during the Transition as the main legacy of Adolfo Suárez, who “this made the transition possible and the confrontation of the two Spains impossible.”

The analysis they carried out on those who preceded them in power also gave rise to different reflections on current politics, with references to the situation experienced in Valencia in recent days, as well as to the elections in the United States . Felipe González used his personal memories with Suárez, with whom he emphasized that they had agreements because they were necessary. “When some of the two did not obey, the members of my party always told me that he had deceived me again, but I reminded them that Suárez had done everything he could and that what he had not respected, it was because he couldn’t, because he couldn’t. I had some leeway. We had errors and discrepancies that we resolved. »

For his part, Aznar highlighted the figure of Suárez that “paying homage to a main protagonist of the transition is a manifestation of respect”, and commented that “in these times of fragmentation and animosity towards the political adversary and the rejection of those who think differently, showing respect to all those who made the Transition is something I want to do here and Suárez and Felipe González are included in it,” reports Ical.

In relation to the current political situation, the two former presidents expressed their concern about the lack of unity of the two main parties on key issues for the state. Thus, Aznar said he had many discussions with González, but he added that he did not feel that the essential issues were ever called into question. “We could argue, but politics should be like chess, which has rules, and if you don’t respect the rules, you can’t play. And democracy is the same. Once black wins and sometimes white wins, but the board is not touched. Now someone kicked the board and broke it, and this cannot happen, because someone will come behind him for whom the board is useful and this board is the spirit of harmony of the transition.

The rector of the Catholic University of Ávila (UCAV), María del Rosario Sáez Yuguero, also mentioned the figure of Adolfo Suárez, for whom he is a “source of inspiration” for all and also a model of “concord and unity” between Spaniards. “Today more than ever we must remember his legacy and learn from it,” he said of the Ávila politician.
