At least 14 dead in several Israeli bombings against suspected Iranian targets in Syria

Israel launched a series of bombings against northwestern Syria on Sunday evening that left at least 14 dead and more than 40 injured, according to the official Syrian news agency SANA.

The airstrikes targeted the city of Masyaf and the director of the city’s national hospital, Faisal Haidar, told SANA that the death toll stood at 14 and that six of the injured were in “critical” condition.

According to the official version from Damascus, several Syrian military positions were targeted by the bombings, although the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that pro-Iranian militias allied with the Syrian regime and a regular target of Israel in that country were present at the site of the attack. points. This UK-based NGO, which closely follows the developments in the conflict in Syria, reported that several bombings hit the area in about three hours, targeting facilities where experts from Tehran-backed militias are located who are allegedly responsible for weapons development. According to the SOHR, floating structures on the Syrian coast, among other targets, were also attacked.

Israel has generally not taken responsibility for its bombings in Syria since the start of the conflict in the neighboring country, which is home to both fighters from the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah and Iranian military advisers who support the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. The Israeli military has stepped up its offensives against Syrian territory since the start of the Gaza war last October.

Last Thursday, an unknown drone hit a weapons truck allegedly belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards on the outskirts of the town of Al Bukamal, in eastern Syria and near the border with Iraq, according to local organizations. Such actions have been attributed in the past to Israel, which has also carried out several selective attacks on vehicles on the road between Damascus and Beirut in recent months. The last of these, in late August, in which three members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and one from Hezbollah were killed near the village of Al Sabboura, in the west of the country.
