Risk of further landslides persists

The typhoon, which caused flooding and landslides, also left more than 1,900 people injured and more than 168,000 homes damaged and 183,000 hectares of flooded rice fields.

The NGO Blue Dragon Children said in a statement yesterday that as Hanoi recovers from the floods, many families in the most remote areas of the north have started receiving aid several days after being cut off by the floods.

NGO workers have been able to deliver aid to remote areas of the northern provinces of Dien Bien and Ha Giang, among the country’s poorest and home to many ethnic minorities. Although the situation has improved, it continues to rain. There is a risk of further landslides.

The United Nations children’s agency, UNICEF, said: It is still too early to assess all the damage caused. by the typhoon in Vietnam and authorities have requested help from international agencies to respond to the natural disaster.

The Yagi struck earlier Philippines (21 deaths) and China (2 deaths) and, after crossing Vietnam, where it was downgraded to a tropical depression on Sunday, it caused serious flooding in Thailand and Burma (Myanmar).
