MARQ excavations at the medieval site of Pobla d’Ifac identify a 14th-century shed

The work carried out in the Ifac town This summer, during the 19th Excavation Campaign of the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ), they unearthed a shed from the beginning of the 14th century intended for storage or the exercise of different functions outside the walls of the medieval city.

The Alicante Deputy for Culture, Juan de Dios Navarro, visited this Wednesday the archaeological site, located on the slopes of the Peñón de Ifach Natural Park, to learn first-hand the details of this campaign that has a duration of five weeksas reported by the provincial company in a press release.

Accompanied by the Councilor for the Environment of Calp, Juan Manuel del Pino, and the director of MARQ and coordinator of the campaign, Manuel Olcina, the provincial director visited the enclave where a team of professionals has been working for four weeks under the direction of José Luis Menéndez, specialist in medieval archaeology and exhibition technician at the Alicante Museum.

“For the Provincial Council, it is a great satisfaction to support this campaign for recover and enhance part of the rich heritage culture that we cherish in the province, in this case through a project in which more than a million euros have already been invested in almost two decades of collaboration with the Calpine city council,” said the deputy.

For his part, Del Pino thanked the effort made by the provincial institution through the MARQ, whose team is already working on the master plan for the site.

Framed within the framework of the MARQ archaeological excavation and research plan, whose overall budget amounts to 114,000 euros, the actions carried out in Calp received 23,000 euros this year.

The work focused on the area around Puerta del Oestea secondary access to the interior of the city, and determined that Building XIV – discovered during previous campaigns – was a shed intended for storage or various functions outside the city walls.

As Olcina explains, “the shed has dimensions of more than thirteen meters, it is open on both sides and covered with a wooden and tiled roof.” It was built at the beginning of the fourteenth century and in the middle of the century the building was abandoned to build a covered door that would ensure passage to the West Gate.

The archaeological work has also focused on documenting the first phase of occupation of this space, as well as the interior space of the city, once the threshold of the West Gate has been crossed. The MARQ continues to investigate this important enclave, which has become a “reference” in Valencian medieval archaeology, the institution states.
