PP deputy in the Andalusian Parliament María Díaz Cañete has died at the age of 40

The deputy of the Popular Group in the Andalusian Parliament of the province of Seville, María Díaz Cañete, died at the age of 40 from cancer.

This was announced by the president of the Junta and the PP of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno, in a message on the social network dedicated to the passion for public service and the fight against a serious illness. “A big hug to his family from all of us who were able to work alongside him for a better Andalusia,” Moreno stressed.

Born in Lora del Río (Seville) on February 7, 1984, Díaz Cañete graduated in journalism from the University of Seville and entered the Andalusian Parliament after the last regional elections in June 2022, in which the PP obtained an absolute majority.

Previously, she was a delegated councilor and first deputy mayor of the Lora del Río City Council (Seville) in charge of the areas of Urban Planning, Finance, Personnel, Education, Citizenship and Culture between June 2019 and July 2022 and previously she was the mayor’s chief of staff between November 2016 and June 2019.

Andalusian Parliament proposes to postpone plenary session

That same morning, the president of the Andalusian Parliament, Jesús Aguirre (PP), called an urgent meeting of the Council of the Chamber and the Council of Spokespersons to propose the postponement of the second day of the first plenary session of the new legislature of sessions after the death of the parliamentarian.

The meeting of the Council and the Council of Spokespersons will take place at 8:30 a.m. and, half an hour later, Aguirre will inform the plenary of the decision adopted after observing a minute of silence in memory of Díaz Cañete. The plenary session this Thursday includes the government control session with questions from the groups to the president of the Council, Juanma Moreno, in addition to the debate of an interpellation and four non-law proposals.

In statements to Canal Sur Radio, Aguirre explained that he learned of the death of the deputy last night and immediately contacted the spokesmen of the groups, who were “shocked” by the death of a “very active, very loved and very young” parliamentarian.

“We are in the middle of a plenary session and it is very complicated because we are all thinking of Maria, I spoke to her on the phone two days ago and I was with her a week ago, we are very dismayed,” added the President of the Parliament, who affirmed that the decision adopted by the Council and the Commission of Spokespersons during the plenary session will be “common to all groups.”
