Jean-Noël Barrot promises to “defend international law”
The new Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, promised, contrary to his predecessor, Stéphane Séjourné, “defending international law.” “The prosperity of France and Europe cannot be built in isolation from the rest of the world.”he added, before flying to the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York.
“In Ukraine, in the Middle East, in Haiti, in the Great Lakes region, in the South China Sea, this ministry will defend international law with all its might in the service of a just peace.”he assured. “Democracy is under attack from all sides. Our country is the target and the target of the enemies of democracy. France will defend itself against all foreign interference, against all hybrid threats.”he also declared.
The new head of French diplomacy also promised Iranian and Afghan women on Monday that they would not “not only” and that France would be “at your side”when he took office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“This ministry will be fully mobilized whenever fundamental freedoms, human rights and minority rights are in danger”the 41-year-old centrist said during the handover of power from his predecessor, Stéphane Séjourné.
