They rescue two hikers stuck between the rocks of La Pedriza

This Friday, the Special Mountain Intervention Group (GREIM) of the Civil Guard rescued two hikers stuck in the La Pedriza area, in the Madrid municipality of Manzanares El Real.

As the Armed Institute reported yesterday, these middle-aged individuals warned Friday morning that they were stuck between rocks and could not leave the Yelmo area. GREIM specialists went to the site and ensured the evacuation of these two mountaineers by helicopter.

Fortunately, both remained unharmed when rescued by the Civil Guard, having themselves provided information about their whereabouts to facilitate their location.

No more evacuations

This is not the only rescue that has taken place this month in La Pedriza, an area that attracts hundreds of climbers every day. Last Sunday, firefighters from the Special High Altitude Rescue Group (GERA) of the Community of Madrid went to the site to rescue a young climber who had suffered an accident. After being evacuated, he was transferred to Summa112, who took him by helicopter to the hospital for minor head trauma.

The previous Thursday, GERA firefighters also rescued another young 29-year-old mountaineer in La Pedriza, disoriented while performing the famous Long rope course. Eventually, they located him in the upper area and managed to get him down after two and a half hours of walking. The man suffered from mild hypothermia, was soaked and was treated by health services.

In 2023, 285 actions were recorded in different parts of the Madrid mountains during which this team of firefighters provided assistance to hikers in case of emergency. Among them, 210 concerned the rescue of people injured or suffering from health problems in the mountains, while 75 aimed at finding lost hikers. On 161 occasions, the use of helicopters was necessary for rescues.

In addition, on 50 occasions GERA has worked with Summa112, a service offered by the Community since 2022 with the aim of providing immediate care and a better assessment of the state of health of the injured person during their transfer to a hospital.
