Prices of Cero and Eco cars fall by 12% in two years

The arrival on the market of cheaper electrified models and the strong demand experienced in particular by hybrid technology, where three out of ten registrations are of this type, are causing a 12% price drop over the last two yearsnow averaging 26,792 euros.

The data is provided by AutoScout24, Sumauto’s specialist used vehicle portal, based on data from the Tax Agency, adding that “this depreciation “This coincides with the increase in the number of models with some type of hybridization.”

Increased combustion costs

In their analysis, they point out that in addition, the cost of combustion models has increased – with a price that is 23,216 euros for gasoline (+9.5%) and 24,046 euros for diesel (+6%) – which, in turn, are produced less and less.

AutoScout24 adds that “the inflation of the automotive sector coexists with the industry’s desire to make electrified vehicles more accessible, since The price is generally one of the main obstacles to its acquisition“.

Reasons for price drops

This price normalization The number of cars with Eco and Zero environmental labels purchased in Spain is due to various factors.

The main reason is the presence of several models with some type of hybrid technology (petrol-electric, plug-in hybrid and microhybrids) on the list of best-selling cars in our country.

As examples The analysis provides vehicles such as the Renault Clio (from around 23,400 euros), the Fiat 500 Hybrid (from around 17,000 euros), the Toyota Yaris (from 21,000 euros) and the Fiat Panda Hybrid (from 16,000 euros), among others, according to the report on new vehicle registrations for the period January-August 2024 from the manufacturers’ association Anfac.

New Chinese competitors

Another factor that brought down the average price is the arrival of new competitorsnotably Chinese brands, with vehicles less expensive than their European, Japanese and South Korean counterparts.

This is the example of the new MG3 Hybrid, a model sold for less than 20,000 euros, a price practically unmatched among vehicles with similar characteristics.

Only 6% of cars are “green”

Despite the drop in prices for models of this type that Spaniards buy, barely 1% of the vehicle fleet has 100% electric or plug-in hybrid technologyi.e. the Zero label.

However, The weight of cars carrying the Eco badge is gradually increasing, until reaching a little more than 5%; less penalized by the consumer because they do not have the handicap of autonomy or charging infrastructure.

6.6 million without a badge

However, 6.6 million cars without an environmental label – 26% of the total – are still on Spanish roads, i.e. petrol models from before 2000 and diesel models from before 2006.

Given this scenario and taking into account the growing demand for hybrid vehicles, including them in the future MOVES IV would be a smart and effective measure to move towards a more sustainable and efficient fleet, based on the fact that the Electrification would be more feasible if done in stages this in a direct and imposing manner, which clearly does not work.

Assistance for Zero and Eco users

The platform indicates that “it would also be wise to direct these assistance with used Zero and Eco vehiclespreferably with a maximum of around 4 years.

They claim that, in this way, “it is possible to ensure that these labels reach the most modest sections of the population and that today, when buying a car, they usually opt for a used car more than ten years old, which continues to be the best-selling vehicle in Spain.

According to Ignacio García Rojí, spokesperson for AutoScout24, “MOVES IV should evolve into an aid plan that encourages direct aid to accelerate the decarbonization of the fleet. Taking into account this 3 out of 10 recordings show some type of hybridization“Encouraging this type of automobile would facilitate the transition to total electrification.”
