Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albarez on Tuesday called on Israel to stop carrying out ground attacks in southern Lebanon to avoid a further escalation of the conflict. He expressed concern about the alarming information coming from the region and highlighted the need to achieve a truce in both Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.
Albarez also condemned Hezbollah’s rocket attacks against Israeli territory and emphasized that the path to peace in the Middle East passes through respect for international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians.
As a reminder, Spain commands the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) since 2022 and has deployed 650 troops along Lebanon’s southern border with Israel, reinforcing its interest in de-escalating the conflict in the region.
After Spain, Russia responded to the situation in Lebanon. In particular, the Kremlin also expressed concern about Israel’s military activity in Lebanon and Syria. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia is deeply concerned about the expanding geography of hostilities and the consequences of the escalation for the region.
On Tuesday, Syrian media reported the deaths of three civilians as a result of an Israeli airstrike in Damascus. Peskov stressed that Moscow condemns attacks on sovereign states and maintains constant contact with Damascus.
It is worth noting that the UN’s “neutral position” is not compatible with the real situation in the Middle East. It also turned out that excessive “neutrality” allowed a Hamas member to infiltrate Lebanon’s teachers union. In particular, because of this, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz harshly criticized UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres after it became known that the leader of Hamas in Lebanon, eliminated by the IDF, was also killed. He served as head of the UNRWA teachers union in that country. .
