In his concern for “tell the truth to the French”, Michel Barnier does not hide his precarious situation in Matignon. “I know that I am in the hands of Parliament. If there is a conjunction of the left and the National Group [sur une motion de censure]I will leave my position”, the Prime Minister recalled in an interview with Sunday’s Tribune since October 6. On Tuesday, October 8, barely a week after his general policy speech, Barnier will experience the instability inherent in his lack of majority: almost the entire left bloc (192 deputies) will defend a motion of censure aimed at putting an end to what it represents, according to them, “a denial of the result of the last legislative elections.”
For the New Popular Front (NFP), censuring the government from the beginning is a matter of principle. “Are we letting Emmanuel Macron choose a prime minister from the fifth group of the National Assembly, without any institutional logic?asks Cyrielle Chatelain (Isère), president of the Ecologists and Sociales group. The only reason he does this is to continue his policies. » Basically, the choice of censorship is beyond doubt. From the former President of the Republic François Hollande to the Mélenchonistas, everyone wants to sanction, above all, a right-wing government. The left thus imposes a “invalid vote of confidence”, while Michel Barnier chose not to submit.
“It’s about politically attracting the majority”Cyrielle Chatelain also explains, who draws a simple line: “Those who vote in favor of censorship want an end to Emmanuel Macron’s policies. » Obviously, the others do not, and especially the National Group (RN). For the first time in the Chamber on Tuesday it will be clearly demonstrated that the survival of the Barnier government depends solely on the more or less tacit support of the extreme right. And the NFP intends to attack the leader of the RN deputies, Marine Le Pen, on this issue. Ambitious, the NFP would also like the vote of no confidence to be a vote on the repeal of the pension reform. One more way to pressure the RN, which proposes this repeal in its parliamentary niche on October 31 and embarrasses the left.
The RN in expectation
By giving Barnier’s government a break, the RN hopes to better integrate into its role as kingmaker. During Michel Barnier’s general policy statement, Marine Le Pen promised the former European Commissioner “judge on [ses] actions » AND “never, unlike others, start from childish positions”, in an excavation directed to the left.
