Sánchez predicts a catastrophic future if the passage to immigrants is closed and promises to regularize them more quickly

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, appeared this Wednesday in Congress to give explanations on immigration policy. From the podium, Sánchez predicted a catastrophic future if the immigration passage was closed and promised to regularize them more quickly through immigration regulations.

Sánchez, however, did not announce any specific measures to alleviate the migration crisis that the Canary Islands are currently experiencing. He limited himself to criticizing the PP for having left the negotiating table on the reform of the immigration law, negotiations which failed last weekend.

As Sánchez explained, Spain has a population aging problem and immigration is necessary to keep many jobs afloat and maintain social security contributions. He said that over the next 25 years, “our population pyramid could lose up to four million people.”

He also assured that there are sectors like agriculture, construction or hospitality that need immigration to survive. To avoid this catastrophic situation, he says, there are “two tools: births and migrations”.

This is why Sánchez defended that he would bring the approval of the immigration regulations to the Council of Ministers to accelerate the immigration regularization processes. This is a measure aimed at resolving the arrivals crisis, but it does not remove the need for reception.

The regulation, on which the Ministry of Inclusion is already working, aims to relax the conditions that immigrants must meet to regularize their situation. It will mainly focus on residence authorization and the granting of work permits and the simplification of various administrative procedures.

Sánchez also said that new places would be created in reception centers and that security forces would be strengthened to “continue strengthening the instruments that allow legal, safe and orderly migration”, which he predicted as “the best way to put an end to the mafias.”

Likewise, he defended a labor migration program and policies to count on NGOs and civil associations that address the migratory phenomenon to refine existing mechanisms and implement new ones that may be necessary.
