Israel recommends Lebanon withdraw UN peacekeepers: UNIFIL reacts

Israel has approached Lebanon with a proposal to move the UN peacekeeping force (UNIFIL) to the north of the country due to intensifying fighting with the Hezbollah group.

This was reported by The Times Of Israel.

The call came after media reports said the IDF carried out attacks on several UN positions, wounding two peacekeepers.

Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, said moving forces 5 kilometers further north could reduce the risk to peacekeepers, as the situation along the Blue Line remains very volatile.

According to him, Israel is not seeking a military presence in Lebanon, but is willing to take all necessary measures to eliminate the Hezbollah threat on the northern border, allowing tens of thousands of Israelis to return to their homes.

In turn, the UNIFIL representative noted that peacekeepers refused to evacuate posts in southern Lebanon, despite Israel’s concerns about the possible consequences of military action.

The UNIFIL representative stressed the importance of respecting UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which prohibits Israel from crossing the Blue Line and requires Hezbollah to disarm and withdraw its forces north of the Litani River.

However, since the adoption of this resolution in 2006, it has not been fully implemented in southern Lebanon.

Previously, Kursor wrote that the UN made new accusations against Israel.

The UN believes that Israel is deliberately destroying Gaza’s health system.
