Today it became known that the United States will deploy in Israel a battery of the THAAD anti-missile defense system, considered one of the most advanced in the American air defense arsenal.

This system is capable of intercepting ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere. An important feature of THAAD is the ability to work in a single complex with the Israeli Hetz system. This integration was achieved through regular joint US-Israeli air defense exercises called Juniper Cobra.
During a ballistic missile attack, the Hetz system and THAAD will be able to rapidly distribute targets, determining which system should intercept a particular threat. Previously, in 2012, a THAAD radar was deployed in Israel, but the battery with interceptors was not deployed.
According to online information, the unique feature of THAAD is its “hit-kill” method: the missiles destroy targets using kinetic energy, reaching speeds of up to Mach 8, without the use of explosives. This minimizes collateral damage during interception in populated areas.
The range of the system is about 200 kilometers and the maximum interception altitude is 150 kilometers. The THAAD battery includes six mobile launchers, each equipped with eight missiles, and tactical command posts. The system has demonstrated high efficiency, achieving a 100% success rate in recent tests.
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates successfully used the system to intercept a ballistic missile during a Houthi attack. However, its powerful radars have raised concerns between China and Russia because they can track missiles over long distances, sparking diplomatic disputes.
