An international team of scientists from Portugal, Denmark and the United Kingdom has found that almost a third of Europe’s plant species are at risk of extinction due to declines in seed dispersers such as animals, birds, reptiles and insects.
Oku.AzAccording to the report, the study was published in the scientific journal “Science.”
Many plant species depend on animals to transport their seeds to distant places for propagation.
The experts’ conclusions are based on the analysis of the pan-European seed distribution network of 592 plant species.
Scientists have concluded that, due to this trend, around a third of plants in Europe will be in danger of extinction. The researchers noted that the next step will be to study changes in European ecosystems.
