In the far north of New Caledonia, the Pagou tribe in Koumac will give its name to a congress that will go down in the annals of the Kanak and Socialist Front for National Liberation (FLNKS). The pro-independence alliance had chosen the place called “Bois noir”, named after this umbrella-shaped tree under which we gather to protect ourselves from the rain or the sun, because of its “53my extraordinary congress”. The appointment of Christian Tein as president of the FLNKS on Saturday 31 August was extraordinary. Or the emblematic leader of the Field Action Coordination Unit (CCAT), who has been in preventive detention in the Mulhouse-Lutterbach prison (Haut-Rhin) since 23 June for his alleged role in the violence that has shaken the archipelago for almost four months and caused eleven deaths.
A position that has not been filled since 2001, in favor of a “rotating animation” of the four historic components of the front. The consequences of an operation on the surface and a culture of delay, partly responsible for the failure of the demand for independence, had been denounced by the young activists of the CCAT, openly, during the first general assembly of the movement in June.
“It is the congress of reconciliation of the FLNKS with the pro-independence people, with the youth”welcomes Laurie Humuni, Secretary General of the Oceania Democratic Rally, the party currently led by the FLNKS. The CCAT, a pro-independence organisation blamed by the government for the unrest, is also recognised as a “tool for political mobilization”. For their part, the “nationalists”These ten movements revolving around the FLNKS, which have one thing in common: they are hardliners, have finally received the sesame they have been waiting for for a long time: a place alongside the four historical components.
In fact, the cursor has moved within the FLNKS. The Progressive Union of Melanesia (UPM) and the Kanak Liberation Party (Palika), parties considered moderate and whose agenda they did not support, did not participate in this congress.
