The divorce between Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez has been making headlines this week. Although there are many theories about the end of the relationship between the singer and the actor, many believe that the documentary The Greatest Love Story Ever Toldreleased last February, had already revealed a lot about their relationship.
The Greatest Love Story Ever Told: What Does Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s Documentary Say?
The Prime Video documentary was billed as a behind-the-scenes look at Lopez’s short film that accompanied his latest album, It’s me…now: a love story.
The Greatest Love Story Ever Told explores what brought them together again, as well as their bond and even their conflicts. But, as several media outlets, including CNN, note, the documentary, in retrospect, It’s revealing of their relationship.
At one point in the documentary, it is shown how Affleck collected all the correspondence they had written for 20 years.letters and emails, and put them in an album he called The Greatest Love Story Ever Told (The greatest love story ever told). He gave it to Lopez for their first Christmas together after they met.
Lopez used the letters as inspiration for the album It’s me…now and shared them with his creative team.
“I always thought that private things were sacred and special.” because, in part, they’re private,” Affleck says at one point in the film. “We’re just two people with different approaches trying to learn to get along.”
Even though Affleck seems to understand why his letters and messages were sharedcan probably be interpreted as a division in the couple.
As Consequence of Sound notes, throughout the documentary, Affleck seems exceptionally uncomfortable, something Lopez acknowledges at one point, confessing: “I don’t think he’s very comfortable with me doing all this. But he loves me, he knows I’m an artist and he’s going to support me in whatever he can.
He certainly gets involved at various points throughout the film, whether it’s in candid footage of them working on the script for This Is Me… Now, or in a series of interviews with Lopez that reveal him as the interviewer behind the film’s camera.
At another point, Affleck explains off-screen that when he “first read the script, it seemed like the inciting incident that caused all this pain down the line was our breakup. I thought, ‘Wow, nobody did anything wrong. It was mutual.'” I think to get over this we have to forgive him, forgive each other. Will you forgive me? We do not see Lopez’s answer to the question.

Before getting married (twice) in 2022, Lopez and Affleck were engaged two decades earlier, but They called off their engagement three days before their planned September 2003 wedding due to the pressure of living in the spotlight.
“Ben and I broke up three days before our wedding,” Jen tells her crew in one scene. “We had planned a big wedding, with 14 ushers and bridesmaids, and three days before we collapsed under the pressure. I think we all keep thinking, ‘I’m fine, I’ve been through this.’ If you’re like me, you just shake it off, do your thing and take on the world.”
