Can buses carrying tourists drive on a specially designated lane in Baku?

The issue of using bus lanes in Baku is occasionally a topic of discussion on social networks.

Oku.Az The topic of discussion this time was “Can buses transporting tourists from hotels or businesses in the city to the regions use the bus lane?” – the question was discussed.

Many drivers believe that any bus can use a specially reserved lane. But how does this really work?

We have submitted a request to the Azerbaijan Land Transport Agency (AYNA) on this issue.

Press Secretary of the Institution Tural Orujov Read.AzIn its statement, it said that only regular-route buses and operational vehicles would be allowed to circulate on the organized lanes.

“The route network, which is designed to bring about fundamental changes in the quality of passenger transportation on urban and suburban routes in Baku, is being implemented together with the new bus lane network.

Special lanes with a length of more than 77 kilometres have been created on 26 streets and avenues in the capital, and these works are continuing.

Only regular route buses and operational vehicles may circulate on organised lanes.

Private vehicles are prohibited from entering the bus lane. “Private cars entering the lane, together with the movement of dozens of buses, create an obstacle for thousands of passengers to reach their destination on time,” the statement said.

This means that tourist buses, minivans and any buses operating on command are also prohibited from entering the bus lanes and will be fined 100 manats and 2 points for this violation, just like drivers of other vehicles.

It should be noted that, according to the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On Traffic”, the movement of other vehicles on the roads marked with signs 5.9, 5.10.1 – 5.10.3 (bus lanes) and intended for general-purpose vehicles is not permitted. Driving on such a lane is subject to a fine of 100 manats and 2 penalty points.

At the same time, the right to drive a vehicle is restricted for six months if drivers accumulate 20 or more points in one year.
