AEMET warns that DANA will also leave strong storms this Wednesday: the most affected areas

We’ve had rain for a while. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has warned that it is very likely that the precipitation caused by the DANA (Isolated High Level Depression) in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands start to lose intensity at the end of the weekmore precisely on Sunday and will definitely ease on Monday as the phenomenon dissipates.

Thus, he recalled that DANA is located around the Gulf of Cádiz, where it will remain almost stationary for much of the week. At the same time, it influenced the areas of the southern and eastern thirds of the peninsula are most likely to receive rainwhich could also be recorded intensely. Despite this, he stressed that it is difficult to specify the location of the largest accumulations due to the uncertainty over DANA’s position.

AEMET clarified that yesterday was the “peak” day of the episode. During this day, the Strait, eastern Andalusia, Murcia, eastern Castilla-La Mancha and the Valencian Community were the areas most affected by intense rains and storms.

This Wednesday, DANA will move slowly northwest and will be centered around southwest peninsula. Thus, the areas with the greatest probability of locally recording very heavy and persistent precipitation would be Western Andalusia and Strait area; the surroundings of the Iberian system (especially in its eastern part) and within the Valencian Community and Catalonia.

However, it cannot be ruled out that the rains also affect other points in the northeast quadrant of the peninsula. In fact, the state agency indicated that Showers would extend to other areas in the interior of the peninsula less intense and more dispersed, except in the extreme southeast and northwest, where they are not expected.

The most likely is that DANA will remain located to the west of the peninsula during the day on Thursday, according to AEMET forecasts. As a result, the areas most likely to receive precipitation will be concentrated in the southern Atlantic slope and strait area.

Western Andalusia

In this context, it is likely that they are locally strong and persistent in the Strait area and in western Andalusiaas well as on the southern slopes of the Western Peninsula mountain ranges, especially the central system. At the same time, more scattered showers could also occur around the Balearic Islands and the northern Mediterranean slope, without excluding that they could be occasionally heavy.

The state agency announced that uncertainty regarding the trajectory and intensity of DANA increases significantly in the following days. The most likely scenario envisages a moving to the southeast this weekend as the phenomenon weakens, precipitation would lose intensity in a large part of the peninsula.

However, instability will persist in the Mediterranean area, with probable showers and storms affecting the Balearic Islands, the Valencian Community and Catalonia during the weekend and which could be locally strong and persistent. Thus, he concluded that the scenario that has the most possibilities is that the precipitation begins to lose intensity by the end of Sunday and that it finally subsides on Monday as the DANA dissipates.
