Andalusia to create flood zone map with emergency instructions: ‘They live in a tinderbox’

After the devastating passage of DANA for our country, with hundreds of deaths and billions of dollars in damage, the Junta of Andalusia announced this Thursday that it was going to prepare a flood zone map in which they will be given “specific instructions” to municipalities and neighbors to know what to do in the event of an emergency and so that citizens are “aware” of the risk involved in the environment. “They live in a powder magazine”declared the Andalusian president, Juanma Dark.

He did so in the Regional Parliament and in response to a question from the spokesperson for Por Andalucía, Inmaculada Nieto, who asked to “learn lessons” from this latest DANA. “This Government has alerted and continues to take decisions jointly with town halls so that residents of flood-prone areas know that when they go to a house -located in these areas- It’s going to flood, because they are in natural channels of streams and rivers”, replied the Andalusian leader.

“We are going to give concrete instructions to citizens and municipalities to, initially, that they do not extend these areas, as some have allowed, and, secondly, so that citizens know that they live in a powder keg”, he added. The intention of the Council, according to Moreno, is to give clear instructions so that residents of risk areas know “exactly what should they do in case of emergency.

Regardless, Moreno maintained that in the face of a natural disaster of such magnitude as the DANA that hit the Valencian Community, it is very difficult to act: “There is no system in the world which can be prepared for 500 liters per square meter or for a tsunami.

The President of the Council, who advocated “the protection of the State among all”, recalled that his executive power created in 2023 THE Security and Comprehensive Emergency Management Agency of Andalusia (ASEMA), which will have a budget of 260 million in 2025, a decision to which are added the additional 100 million allocated to the Andalusian forest fire system, decisions which have “strengthened the entire emergency system” .

Although the Law to promote the sustainability of the territory of Andalusia (List) already provides that construction cannot be carried out in flood-prone areas, the Council “has been working on this subject for a long time with the municipal councils of the eight provinces. “It is necessary to communicate and explain which areas are prone to flooding so that everyone knows,” Andalusian government spokesperson Carolina España said in statements to Radio Canal Sur. The Minister of Economy also stressed that areas prone to flooding “must be declared rural” and recalled that sanctions build on them “they never prescribe”.

When asked about the fact that Frontera Sherry (Cádiz) is not one of the municipalities to which the government of Pedro Sánchez will allocate AIDSCarolina España trusts that the Central Executive will eventually include it and other municipalities affected by Almeria and Malaga. “In these circumstances, it is very important that aid arrives quickly,” he stressed.
