Ceasefire in Lebanon: Kirby estimates when the agreement will be signed

The United States and France are ready to announce a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in the coming hours. According to Western media, the agreement, negotiated by Washington and Paris, includes a 60-day cessation of hostilities. The White House and the Elysee Palace have so far avoided making official comments, but US national security adviser John Kirby confirmed that negotiations are nearing conclusion.

The plan provides for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon within two months. They will be replaced by the Lebanese army and international forces led by the United States. The committee that will oversee the implementation of the agreement will include representatives from France, Britain and other countries. Lebanon pledges to disarm Hezbollah and destroy its infrastructure south of the Litani River.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved the agreement in principle, but noted the need to clarify a number of issues. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said the implementation of the agreement must be strictly verifiable and that its key elements are to prevent Hezbollah from strengthening and advancing towards its southern borders.

At the same time, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir expressed dissatisfaction with the agreement, calling it a “historic mistake.” In his opinion, Israel missed the opportunity to inflict a final defeat on Hezbollah.

The negotiations were fraught with difficulties, including disagreements over France’s participation in the follow-up. Israel has expressed fears that Paris could support the International Criminal Court’s actions against Israeli leaders. Despite this, the parties reached a compromise that allowed the main stages of the negotiations to be completed.

The agreement aims to end hostilities that have led to the deaths and evacuations of thousands of civilians on both sides of the border in recent months. The success of its implementation will depend on the willingness of the parties to comply with the agreements and the effectiveness of international control.
