Hyundai appoints Spaniard José Muñoz as CEO

Hyundai automobile company appointed José Muñoz as the new CEO, who will take office on January 1, 2025, replacing the company’s current president and CEO, Jaehoon Changwho was promoted to vice president.

The South Korean automaker says Muñoz will oversee the implementation of the company’s customer-centric vision, building on its position in next-generation mobility, including electrificationthe diversified offer of propulsion systems and hydrogen technology.

He also highlights that the Spanish manager will focus on promoting the company’s global management system to further strengthen Hyundai Motor’s status as a global brand.

José Muñoz’s career at Hyundai

José Muñoz joined Hyundai Motor Company in 2019 as president and global chief operating officer and president and CEO of Hyundai and Genesis Motor in North America.

In 2022, Muñoz was appointed to the board of directors of Hyundai Motor with expanded responsibilities to include Europe, India, Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific. He also led global sales, service and product planning within the Global Operations division.

In addition, Hyundai highlights Muñoz who promoted a commercial structure focused on profitability through optimized management of volumes and profits. In this sense, he explains that as part of his mandate, investments are made $12.6 billion (11,911.86 million euros) to build its new Metaplant America production plant and two battery joint ventures in Georgia (USA).

Before joining Hyundai, Muñoz was director of performance for Nissan automobile company and president of Nissan China and North America. He also held several management positions in Toyota Motor Europe.

Muñoz, 59, a native of Spain and a U.S. citizen, received his doctorate in nuclear engineering from the University Polytechnic University of Madrid and an Executive MBA at IE Business School in Madrid. He also completed executive management programs at the Cranfield School of Management in the United Kingdom and Insead Business School in France.
